Morgan Freeman has been seriously injured in a car crash in Mississippi last night (August 3), it has been reported by Associated Press news agency.

The Oscar winning actor, currently starring in record breaking Batman film The Dark Knight, skidded off Highway 32 in Tallahatchie County, Mississippi, about 100 miles south of Memphis, late on Sunday night, approximately 11.30pm with his Nissan overturning several times.

The actor, reported to have been conscious after the accident, was, along with a unnamed female passenger, airlifted to Memphis Regional Medical Center who have confirmed that Freeman is a patient at the hospital.

Freeman is described as being in a "serious condition."

Freeman won his Academy Award in 2005 for best supporting actor for his role in Million Dollar Baby. He has also been nominated for Oscars for Street Smart, Driving Miss Daisy and The Shawshank Redemption.

Freeman was also due to take on the role of Nelson Mandela in the forthcoming film of his life; The Human Factor.

An official statement from Mississippi Highway Patrol is expected to be issued soon.

I read that he was joking around with people at the scene. A guy tried to get a picture of him with his phone and he just said "no freebies, no freebies."

people are morbid....a lot of people went to see the dark knight, just to see ledger s last performance, only because of that.

Morgan Freeman will leave hospital later this week after successful surgery to repair damage to his left hand and arm following his car crash at the weekend. The Dark Knight actor, 71, is being treated at the regional medical centre in Memphis after his vehicle hit the kerb on a poorly lit stretch of the rural Mississippi Delta highway on Sunday night. Freeman was driving at the time. His passenger, Demaris Meyer, 48, of Memphis, was also treated at the hospital. Surgery on Freeman has also included work to repair a broken arm, broken elbow, and shoulder damage. Freeman's publicist Donna Lee yesterday confirmed her client was looking forward to returning home. She said: "Morgan is doing well after his surgery last night to reconnect nerves and repair damage in his left arm and hand. The surgery last night lasted four and a half hours. He's visiting with family this morning. As of this morning he's up and walking around and looking forward to his release in a few days."

Meanwhile, Freeman's latest film, The Dark Knight, continued to rule the roost at the UK box office at the weekend, pulling in another Ј6.7m to easily outpace its nearest competitors, Mamma Mia! and Wall-E. Of last week's opening films, The X-Files: I Want to Believe debuted insipidly in fourth spot with Ј887,209, while Mike Myers' The Love Guru did even worse, arriving at No 8 with just Ј498,829. The animated comedy Space Chimps debuted just above it at No 7 with a haul of Ј563,543.

There's a definite love-in going on between Quentin Tarantino and Hostel mastermind Eli Roth. Not content with confusing cinemagoers by plastering "Quentin Tarantino presents" all over the first instalment of Roth's torture porn franchise, QT is now giving him an acting role in his forthcoming wartime romp Inglorious Bastards. Roth, who also took a small part in Tarantino's Death Proof, will star as Sgt Donnie Donowitz, who is described as a "baseball bat-swinging Nazi hunter", according to Variety.

I'm glad they got him to play Sirius, he was my favourite character in the books.

Even though he was barely in it, I loved him in True Romance.
