I'd like to call my firstborn Daisy (provided that she's a girl).
I read that in New Zealand they've started removing babies from their parents' custody if they're given odd names. Such as "Benson" and "Hedges" for twins and some poor kid was saddled with something like "I like to do the Hula in Hawaii".

If I have a daughter, her second name will be Charlotta. It was my grandmother's foster mother's second name.

If I have another girl, her second name will be Matilda. That was my grandmother's biological mother's second name.

I just think they both would make beautiful second names and the fact that they are part of my family history make them even more suiting.

OR MAYBE I will have one child who is Something Charlotta Matilda Surname. Or Something Matilda Charlotta Surname.

Someone should count how many times Brody has been mentioned in this thread.

The names I posted here when this thread was made were English and are thus illegal in Finland, so an update:

Girl: Salla, Silja, Riia, Rosa, Kaisa, Sanni, Mira, Aina, Aini, Stella, Siiri, Lilja, Paula, Saana
Boy: Thomas, Julius, Jonne, Jesse, Jens, Jan, Joel, Jasper, Matts, Ilja

English names are illegal in Finland?
That annoys me so much.

Well:

" 32 a § (21.8.1998/617)

As first name shall not be accepted:

1) a name, that has a form or written form contrary to domestic name conventions"
(mind my lousy translation)

Some English names are acceptable, but they have to be pronounced the Finnish way. Which is usually less than pretty. The pronounciation is just so different that it doesn't work..

I have to admit that I agree with the law. Life is going to be tough enough with a normal name, yet alone with one that is constantly mocked, misspelled and pronounced wrong. In general I think parents should stay away from strange names.

ditto.
you can only legally change your name here when you turn 18.
by then, the kid is already traumatized, it'll only help him/her get a job.

are you finnish tracy?
is tracy your real name? ;)
do you have a middle name?
the whole 'middle name' thing is so funny...

Yes, I am Finnish.

Tracy is not my real name. It's Anni-Sofia, which shortens to Annis (which is what everyone calls me, and if someone dares to call me Anni-Sofia I will tear their lungs out and do other nasty stuff as well)

I do have a middle name, Irmelin.

Why funny? Do you have the same name conventions in Brazil than in Portugal?

why'd you choose tracy?
I love your real name... and your middle name even more.

I have no idea how middle names work in Portugal! :D
here, it's usually names that start with João (John), Felipe (Phillip), José (Joseph), Mateus (Matthew) or any other biblical name, and are followed by another biblical name (e.g. José Mateus), so we call them "compounds", because mothers will normally call the children by the whole thing.

The "middle" name is supposed to be used, in fact, people usually drop the first name (because in a classroom, there will be a João Felipe, a João Mateus, a João Carlos) and use the middle name for the rest of their lives (with their mothers calling them by the compound forever).

That happens mostly with boys, btw.
A few unlucky girls with very religious parents are christened Maria José (Mary Joseph) and get the nickname Zezé. Boys at school will call them José, of course.

I find it strange that women could have male names and men female names.. That too is illegal in Finland.

I came to think of the name Tracy because of the movie Thirteen (main character was called that), which I would be embarrassed about if I allowed myself to be embarrassed about my past tastes. Which I don't, because if I did I could never leave the house again. But anyway, I liked the name and then chose it as my pseudo back when I wished I were American (another thing I would be embarrassed about..)

I like Irmelin, but the problem is that it's Swedish. Not that I have anything against Swedish names, but the Finnish version "Irmeli" without the N is the dorkiest name on planet and of course no one in Finland realises that my name has the N. Pff.

god, I laughed hard, please don't let this happen to him.
if I'm a 'grown up' and laughed, I can't even begin to imagine what would happen to him in middle school...

i even made up a whole rhyme for him to hear... and he says "but thats something you made up" and i said... think of what the kids at school will make up

"there once was this kid named bucket,
he came from a place called nantucket
he learned how to fuck-it,
but all he liked to do was tuck-it,
and he only liked to get on his knees and suck-it"

cruel to say. but im just trying to get a point across to him of all the possibilities.
he says it'll make our kid stronger LOL yeah right!

but we've finally come to a conclusion now that everyone has told him thats a horrible name. bucket will not be his name! but we still arent sure what to call him. he says hes going to call him bucket for a nickname all the time :?

im having allot of trouble with names....
i think we want to try and go with waiting to see him first before we name him.
but still.... i cant think of anything... not even a name to bring up (ex: he might be one of those "John" babies, or "Shawn" etc.) when i see his face.

urgh
