Question. When shopping for groceries, what are some ingredients or even foods I should avoid?

So far I don't drink cokes and when I'm shopping I usually check the Nutrition Facts on the back. I don't eat ANYTHING that has "trans fat." I read recently it's supposed to be one of the leading causes of colon cancer. I was like "OH HELL NO" and won't eat anything with Trans fat in it anymore. At least I don't to my knowledge.

What do you avoid and why?

A good rule of thumb is if you can't pronounce the ingredient, it's chemical based and not good for you.

Ah, good idea! I'll havta remember that. I scarcely read the whole list of ingredients though. I mostly look at the nutritional facts and pretend I know/care what I'm looking for.

Another good rule of thumb is the less ingredients included the better.

  1. in general, the "better for you" foods are stocked around the perimeter of the store. they're fresh foods that have no added ingredients, like produce. i second what kelly said about the fewer the ingredients the better. the stuff in the middle of the store is cheap junk that does nothing for your body but make you fat. you're paying for the brightly colored box, the food inside is essentially worthless.
  2. food should have an expiration date! it is supposed to spoil. if it doesn't, then it has been altered in some way. if that means it was fresh and has been frozen, or that it was fresh and has been canned, that's okay. but if it's sold to you in it's edible state, and it does not spoil, freak preservatives have been added. if it preserves food indefinitely, what will it do to your body? think frogs in a jar. do not want.
  3. everyone eats too much meat. you know how i feel about this at an ethical level, but if you can overlook my obvious bias, the truth is that's it's totally unnecessary to our health, and the average amount of meat eaten by americans is well fucking above what even our government's absurd food pyramid deems necessary. crazy people will tell you need meat because you need protein and iron. and in their alternate universe, that's unavailable except in dead animal form. i recommend they eat some almonds and spinach and stfu. proof, you say? here's some: carnivorous animals have acidic saliva so that their bodies begin to break down the muscle they eat before they've even swallowed it. our saliva is basic, so the digestion process is much slower and sometimes, ineffective, hence the plethora of fiber supplements available to consumers. gross.
  4. finally, the fda is a corrupt, profit-centered joke of a government agency. what they say about the safety of any product cannot be trusted. i know i sound like a conspiracy theorist, but it is absolutely true. they give their approval to products that have the potential for profit, whether by consumer consumption, or producers' ability to make more, faster. example? sure: recombinant bovine growth hormone. this is a synthetic copy of a protein naturally produced in the glands of cattle. by administering this hormone to cows, dairy farmers force them to produce milk when they are not pregnant or feeding calves so that it can be produced, treated, and sold more quickly. this has adverse effects on the health of dairy cows (inflamed breast tissue, lameness, and infertility), and if that doesn't dissuade you, then what it could to our own bodies should (it has been linked to cancer in some studies). canada, australia, new zealand, and most of the e.u. have banned its use. if you need more evidence that the fda is worthless, start counting the number of prescription and over-the-counter drug recalls.

so, the moral of the story is to eat food that is fresh and less processed.

wow. okay.

I like these rules of thumb you keep giving me. :>

This makes sense. I usually don't go into any of the aisles, unless I'm looking for something specific. Like... Cookies.

Other than sandwiches I don't eat a whole hell of a lot of meat. Whenever I cook anything that calls for meat (things like Pastas and shit) I just leave the meat out because I'm too lazy to cook the meat.

I don't drink milk and if I get a cereal I get the kinds that go with soy milk. Like Raisin Brand. Shit like that.
When I was living with a room mate he thought I was crazy for drinking soy milk. Once I was sitting at the table, eating cereal with soy milk and he came and sat down across from me with a glass of milk milk and took a big drink then did one of those obnoxious "AHHHH"s and licked his lips and stared at me. I was like whateva.

Don't buy diet foods, or anything with "-70% fat" or "-50% sugar". I know they are already excluded by Kelly's rules but seriously people, a bit of real butter or cheese won't give you a heartattack.. The way governments and health organisations have promoted margarines etc. has made it seems as if 0.000000000000000000001 grams of fat would make you collapse and die.

I heard that Diet Coke and Margarine are two of the worst possible things you can eat.

Also, the first ingredient that is listed is what it is mostly made out of. So if the list starts with like a fruit or vegetable, that's a great sign. With soda, the first two listed are carbonated water and high fructose corn syrup. Soso bad.

What the hell IS high fructose corn syrup anyways? I've always wondered.

Yeah that's what the Americans came up with to be less reliant on imports.. if I remember correctly.

it is really sick what they do to our food...reconstituted milk is fucking stupid, they turn it into powder and then turn it back into a liquid...just use normal milk!? surely that would save them more money even though the products wouldn't last as long. And red food like red smarties at least here are made red by using cochineal...crushed beetles (also called carmic acid). I'm vegetarian but even if I wasn't I'm not eating insects. All this coke zero stuff is stupid, it has no fat or whatever, like water! so how did they make it that colour? It makes me angry!

Twice now I have entered the CORRECT nutritional values for a Thai Chicken Salad from the Yard House off their revised menu guides, but neither time has the update been reflected in the food database. Is there some special way to do this?

Monosodium Glutamate (MSG)
Phenylanline or Phenytektonics (or something like that)
Sucralose
Saccharin
High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS)
Nickelback hahaha

Remember too that they have to list what is in the product the most as the first ingredient, and then there is less of each following ingredient.

If I pick up a jar of peanut butter and it says like over 10 ingrediennts you can do better. It should say : peanuts, salt. --not Roasted, not Whey, not Peanut Flavoring, etc..
