Its nearly 2010 and every decade seems to have its memorable bands etc.

Who do you think we have for this one?

I guess people will still give a shit about The Libertines in a few years time? Maybe? There isn't any that spring to mind. Its kinda sad.

I can't really think of anything. There's certainly no equivalent of Nirvana or Spice Girls. But I now know almost nothing about the global music scene so I shouldn't be replying anyway.

I wonder if in a few years we're gonna get young teenagers like "holy fuck Franz Ferdinand were so influential when they started out" (just an example) and we're all gonna be like..."what? Really?"

I'm interested to know about other people too, like if there was a band in the 90s they thought no one gave a fuck about, then ten years later they're suddenly a "definitive band of the decade".

Thinking about it I guess people will count some emo bands, after all, they set off that horrible trend.

when you look back, the good bands stand out but even say when the beatles were around, not everyone was into them not everyone thought they were so influential. There's no idols, but again not everyone would have liked David Bowie. Even when there are idols people scream sell out or overrated if they're too big.

I guess 'indie' followed by 'nu rave' and 'emo' will be what this decade was about. We've got 6 months to go though. It's been like a diluted britpop era, left overs and 'indie' got all popular again, but most of those people won't have bought the albums or gone to the gigs. Infact in this decade i got into what I'm into now because of indie, it was like the first alternative stuff I heard but i've never been a casual music listener and I've looked around for stuff to get into as well. it's cool when people are into loads of stuff but it annoys me how people just have singles on their phones and listen to that and don't buy the music. It's sad actually I stopped paying attention to new stuff after a while because I just thought it was so average. Pop music is dead and buried though, rock liiives. Too much nostalgia too. It is the good music that's remembered though and it's mostly guitar based and proper music or maybe it just seems that way because it's what I'm into. All down to opinion though, I hate conversations like this actually it always makes me feel like a hypocrite and makes me confused as to what I actually fuckin mean.

But thats pretty much what I'm asking. Can we tell which bands are gonna be considered as the great bands of the decade?

Is it like this every decade, and we just don't know at the time? Or has music just generally been kinda shite lately? Maybe even, its just me, and we've had bands that have meant something to a lot of people, just not particularly me? Maybe you have to have an outsider's perspective to decide. This is why I wanted to start the discussion.

So there's emo bands which I thought was horrible, but a lot of people my age were into it, so I get that.
Nu-rave was around for like a year, or something, wasn't it? I'm actually kind of surprised, it didn't last longer.
Indie's been dominant. I thought The Libertines were good, not brilliant, but I think every "indie" band after them pretty much all sounded the same.

A lot of people my age were obsessed with Bright Eyes, and that acoustic stuff. Were they a big deal?

I dunno if this decade's music has been worse than the past, or if it was just my personal tastes thinking it was boring.
I've had to go backwards to find music I like, and thats sad to me.

I've been wondering for a while whether "who's in / who's out" lists have always changed this fast or whether it is a characteristic of this millenium? I'm too young to tell.

I find it weird how there doesn't seem to be many "big" bands. Like when you see the headliners for big festivals, and a lot are so old...

Glastonbury 2009 - Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen and Blur
Reading and Leeds 2007 - Smashing Pumpkins
Reading and Leeds 2006 - Pearl Jam

Then looking at the line ups of these festivals we have bands like Muse, who I'd say are probably one of the big bands of the decade. Queens of the Stone Age too.

I dunno, Green Day and Red Hot Chili Peppers have been really popular but I'd say they were more 90s bands, in the sense, they made more of an impact in the 90s? I dunno maybe what they did this decade was relevant too?

The only ones that I can think of that will still stand out in 20 years or so is Muse and... err... yeah. I do believe my point for the past 5 years has been right in saying there has been nothing special produced in music this decade. By this decade, I mean Artists who released debut material after 2000, Muse were 1999.

Which in my opinion is a good thing, actually.
Some of the bands mentioned in this thread may be big in the circles that listen to The Distillers (e.g. The Distillers) but how extensive is their impact?

coldplay, garbage, etc. coldplay in particular, even though i'm not such a big fan, but they are one of the most memorable of the decade.
