I need a little advice. My sister hosted a purse party and my daughter fell in love with a certain purse. Then they brought out the kid's purses and she decided to get one of those instead (it's shaped like a horse). I got a cute purse, even though I didn't really need it. It just goes with a lot of stuff I have. Anyway, when they packed everything up to leave, my kid started to cry really hard; tears were streaming down her face. She really really wanted that other purse. I didn't really want to buy another purse, but I feel really guilty about it. [i:34bay22v]Really[/i:34bay22v] guilty. My question is this: Should I try to trade the purse I got (which I like, but don't necessarily have to have) for the one she really wanted? Could that be teaching her to just cry until she gets her way?

I'm no parent but I would imagine that getting her the purse wouldn't actually teach her that crying will get you what you want. It could just satisfy her temporarily. Later on she'll forget all about it.
But.
NOT getting her the purse and explaining to her (er... how old is she again?) that she had a choice, she made her choice and can't have both, and that crying about NOT getting the purse will teach her (maybe, hopefully) that in the future she should think a little more about what she wants, and that crying about it [i:2pkq3mel]won't fix anything[/i:2pkq3mel] and[i:2pkq3mel] won't get you what you want[/i:2pkq3mel]. As a matter of fact, crying about it could get you the opposite...

You shouldn't feel guilty. She decided she wanted the horse purse. Based on this you decided it would be OK to buy yourself the purse you liked, both of you would be getting a purse you both wanted.
AFTER this she changed her mind. That really fucked your shit up and put you on the spot. Now you feel guilty, you probably just wasted money, you get the short end of the stick here.
PERHAPS you could tell her she could try to give the horse purse back, that way you could get her the other purse?

Going back to the whole "crying won't get you anything" deal... I know a girl who was once stopped by a cop. When the cop came to her window she rolled it down and promptly began to try. The cop didn't know what to do (I have to admit, would've been pretty awkward) and let her go without even a warning. He even offered her a cigarette to calm her down.

I just feel so bad. To me, it's just a purse. To her, it was a huge deal. It seems so silly to even be worrying so much about it. She is only 3 and doesn't need a purse (although, I'm 24 and I don't really need a purse either), but she wanted it so bad and it's hard to explain things to a kid that little. It just sucks because I remember what it was like to not get something I really wanted without really understanding why I couldn't have it.

Also, girls can almost always avoid getting a ticket by crying.

She'll probably forget all about it, and if you do get it for her she'll probably just be happy for a moment and get caught up in something else.

Ironically, I recently (hour or two ago) read an article about a two people arguing. One person is very emotional, the other person is attempting to handle the situation with logic. The logic fails on the emotional person and the "logical" person won't give way to emotion. Neither of them are getting anywhere, and won't, until one speaks to the other on that persons terms (the logical person using emotion in his argument instead of logic)

I can't really help much, like I said I'm no parent, and if I had a daughter I would probably just end up spoiling her.

But at the same time you have to be fair to your kid and teach them because nobody else will, it may seem mean or sort of harsh to you, but in the end it will be worth it. But then again if she's only 3... I honestly can't remember being 3. I can SORT of remember being 4. 5 is completely missing, I got nothing.

No, she's over it. I think that in the end it upset me more than her.

Thats usually how it is, don't sweat it, it's more of things like Christmas and when a little girl talks about something for months you should feel bad if she doesn't get it. I'm glad the crisis has passed

I was such an evil kid. I remember being like 5 or 6 and I was at Target with my dad; I see this stuffed animal beaver. Haha he said "you dont need another stuffed animal you have so many." Which I did. I have bookshelves, closets, and a media room filled with stuffed animals I never played with. I look at him and say "Ok Ill buy it myself." We get to the checkout and he paid for it...he always feel guilty when I use my own money. I still do it today ahah which is awful but effective. My dad is too nice. My mom knows my skills and is willing to say no.

Right now working my Dad for a new car. My mom thinks I should get one...its only a matter of time. Its like chopping wood...keep going at it and eventually it will fall.

My mum is mega generous too. Especially now I've moved out.

She came to visit last weekend and did my whole food shop. I felt guilty but she insisted, and it's nice to have food that isn't bought purely cause its cheap (I can't find a job over summer so I have to stretch my money reeealy far).

Somebody explain to me the typical "moving process." People tend to pack first then start moving, right? Not just "hey let's move today. Just throw everything in some boxes and put in in a truck." Or am I just mistaken?

Some people (like me) plan everything ahead.
Others (like my sister) prefer to improvise.

The two types should not mix.

I want to get everything packed up neatly. My husband wants to just throw everything in boxes the day we move. We haven't even started getting ready yet and he wants to move today.

Student accommedation is about Ј400 a month, this doesn't include anything apart from internet and electricity..

Ugh. I'm probably moving to a smaller city in order to have some money left after paying the rent. Also, do not want to use public transport so it would be nice to live near the city centre which would be impossible in Helsinki. Unless I could afford a Ј600-800 rent for 20 square metres =/. Which I can't.
