nearly six hundred wolves in greater yellowstone and central idaho will be slaughtered if the u.s. federal government's "license to kill" plan is approved. these wolves are an endangered species an must be protected!
you can help by visiting the nrdc website[/url:pl6jvlac] to learn more and voice your opposition to the "license to kill" plan.
the nrdc is a non-partisan organization that works to protect wildlife and natural resources. this is not a ploy to defame the bush administration. these animals need your help!

"A new Bush Administration plan would allow the slaughter of nearly 600 gray wolves in Greater Yellowstone and Central Idaho -- while they're still on the endangered species list.

Please register your opposition by sending a message to the Administration right now:
http://www.nrdconline.org/campaign/Act_Now..._Gray_WolvesIII[/url:pl6jvlac]

Both Wyoming and Idaho are planning to use aerial gunning -- as well as baiting and trapping -- to exterminate wolves. Taken together, their plans could drive northern Rocky Mountain gray wolves back to the brink of extinction.

In Idaho, the governor himself recently boasted, "I'm prepared to bid for that first ticket to shoot a wolf myself."

Wyoming's plan classifies wolves as "predatory animals" in most of the state. As predators, wolves could be shot on sight anywhere by anyone at anytime.

Rampant oil and gas development, logging and other threats are taking a mounting toll on the western wildlands that wolves depend on for survival. More than ever, wolves need tough federal safeguards against hunting and habitat loss.

The wolf's remarkable comeback from the brink of extinction in Greater Yellowstone is one of America's greatest environmental success stories. Don't let the Bush Administration destroy that success!

Send a message today and tell the Bush Administration not to abandon the wolf!

Sincerely,
Frances Beinecke
President
NRDC Action Fund"

it wasn't his idea, actually. i think the state governments requested that the federal ban on hunting wolves be lifted in those two areas. evidently, they feel that the recovery of an endangered species is not a victory, but an inconvenience.

i'm glad someone actually read this post. unfortunately, though, i think you have to be a united states citizen in order to sign the petition. but that's no reason not to try! you can make up an address - 666 fifth ave new york, new york 10037. i'm pretty sure that's a commercial building, but it could be your office!

indeed. and he approved the decision, obviously. i just didn't want to give you the impression that this was his idea or something. i think it's actually big game hunters in colorado and idaho who are to blame. they're worried that the 1,300 wolves living in the region are going to kill off too many of the 300,000 elk living there and then the hunters won't have enough to hunt. which is, of course, utterly ridiculous.

i'm not sure that's advisable, but anything is better than letting them be destroyed.
they are so beautiful.

i just received this email:

Dear Jordan,

Never underestimate what we can do when we work together to save endangered wildlife!

What we accomplished in the last few weeks on behalf of embattled wolves is simply amazing.

Thanks to you, we launched a media blitz that broadcasted our "Call Off the Guns" TV ad into millions of homes across America and generated an Associated Press story that was carried by scores of TV stations and newspapers.

It was capped off by a story in TIME that has put the plight of wolves front and center on the media radar. I hope you will take a moment to read it now.

All this high-profile coverage has cast a glaring spotlight on the Bush Administration's impending stealth attack on the endangered wolf.

And, to date, nearly 220,000 outraged Americans have sent messages of opposition to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.

The window for public comments slammed shut again on October 11. So the fate of the wolf is now in the hands of the Bush Administration.

That's a frightening thought -- given that this President has the worst record of protecting endangered species of any in history.

We're hoping for the best -- that the Bush Administration will heed the public outcry -- but we are preparing for the worst. If the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service proceeds with its “License to Kill” plan, our partner organization, NRDC, will take this fight to federal court in order to defend the wolves of Greater Yellowstone and central Idaho.

I will notify you as soon as the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service announces its decision.

But I can promise you one thing: thanks to you, this fight will no longer play out behind the backs of the American people. In the critical months ahead, the NRDC Action Fund will continue ratcheting up our media campaign and the pressure on the Bush Administration. With your support, we are going to give America's wolves a fighting chance.

Sincerely,

Frances Beinecke
President
NRDC Action Fund

P.S. If you would like our Call Off the Guns TV ad to be seen by millions more Americans, click here to donate now.
