I think this should be a forum for current events you think people should know about.. especially if you're in places other than the U.S. I'd love to hear what is going on in your countries that you think should be known.
Some things that have happened recently that I think people should know about is that one of al queda's leaders was killed in Pakistan this week but there was also a suicide bombing in Baghdad on Friday using made by al queda using mentally ill women strapped with explosives to blow up a pet bazaar which has been attacked before killing 73 people..

They aren't 100% sure about the leader being dead. At least they weren't the last time I checked.

I'm not Russian, but I found this interesting:

The former president (can't think of another word?) of Jukos (Russian oil company) Mihail Hodorkovski, who is imprisoned, stopped eating a few days ago to support his former employee and vice-president of Jukos Valeri Aleksanjania, who is also currently imprisoned and who has been denied proper AIDS-treatment. Which basically means that his health is at great risk. Apparently Aleksanjania has been told that he will get the treatment as soon as he agrees to testify against Hodorkovski. If he were to testify, Hodorkovski could face 22 years in prison.

Another suspicious thing is that Hodorkovksi claims the prosecutor who has offered this deal to Aleksanjania works closely with a certain fellow called Igor Setshini, who juuuust happens to be secretary to the president, Vladimir Putin.

I've understood that Guantanamo is quite a terrible place to be imprisoned in.

yeah but their health care is great, i'm assuming it's because they want to keep them alive to get answers they aren't giving them right away, yeah they do some bad shit to the prisoners i'm not proud of it at all. It makes me mad that it isn't shown very often on the news and instead it's always britney spears

I know some members of this board are interested in animals rights.
There's a video of the cruelties that was secretly filmed by The Humane Society of the United States.

i'm on the humane society's mailing list, they sent me the video, but i couldn't watch it because it was too upsetting.
i'm disgusted that everyone is up in arms over the potentially contaminated beef, but no one cares about the fact that these animals were horribly abused (by everyone i mean the american news media)! that beef is not going to be any more diseased than the hundreds of millions of pounds of meat the usda passes every week. i wish they would focus on the cruelty the cattle suffered; maybe it would inspire people to speak up for the standards of care that dairy and slaughter animals receive.

I'm for the independence, but it will cause some trouble around the world. Already has.

i hope the e.u. backs the kosovars, if not i think there's a good chance their conflict with the russians will become another chechnya. it may yet, even with european support. i hope not.

EU is not going to recognise the independence as a community. Each country chooses for itself. At least Spain has already announced it won't recognise it. Most of the EU countries are going to do it, or have done so already: France, Germany, Denmark, Italy, Austria, Belgium, Finland, Sweden, Poland...

The EU is sending some 2000 people to Kosovo, policemen, judges etc.

i know they determine whether or not to support kosovo independently, but i'm in the habit of referring to europe as a unit. i really shouldn't do that, though, because the european union does not comprise all of europe. talking about it as if it does leaves out iceland, liechtenstein, norway, switzerland, ukraine, et cetera. very irresponsible of me.
